Does the thought of an ooey, gooey grilled cheese sandwich make you cringe? Or does a peanut butter and jelly sandwich make your esophagus close up tightly? Sounds like you have acid reflux and need answers for your problem. Theyre found in the article below which details how to deal with your dilemma.

Chew your food. The more you chew your food, the less work your stomach will have to do. This also slows down the rate at which you are eating, which allows your stomach to keep up with its fullness level. Once youve eaten enough, your stomach will alert your brain and youll feel full.

The way you eat food can cause acid reflux. Some people eat fast and take in a good bit of food. You will see a detriment to your health if you continue to eat this way with acid reflux. Eat only to the point where your body is feeling full, rather than over satiated. You need to eat slowly at the dinner table. Carefully chew your food and lay your fork down between a few bites.

You may need to balance out hydrochloric acid amounts in your body if you want to reduce acid reflux and its symptoms. You can do this, for instance, by using sea salt rather than table salt. Sea salt has chloride and minerals that are good for the stomach and prevent acid.

Drink only a few hours before or after a meal. This is a good way to manage hunger, since you stand a better chance of being thirsty than you do hungry. Drinking liquids outside of mealtimes wont bloat your stomach, so acid wont be as easily transported back to your esophagus.

If you maintain a healthy weight, you are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. All the extra weight on your esophagus can cause the muscles at the base to loosen, allowing acid up into your esophagus. Your body can restrict the acid flow much better if you are at a healthy weight.

Exercise

Exercise is an important habit for those who have GERD, but your timing is key. Wait for two hours after eating before you become active, and dont follow your activity with a sports drink as they are acidic and can make your GERD flare up. Instead, drink water or milk to refuel.

Contracting the abdominal muscles can make food that is in your stomach to make its way back into the esophagus. This is why you need to wait until at least one hour after eating before you attempt to do any physical exercise. You should also avoid any other types of physical exertion directly after meals.

Wait to exercise after you eat. If you put off your exercise by at least an hour, the food will have a better chance to digest. Physical exertion right after you eat could cause the food to move back up toward the esophagus. This could be very uncomfortable and hard to fight.

Exercise regularly but moderately. Your acid reflux problem should not be as bad if you are in shape and live an active lifestyle. Avoid exercising intensely or your stomach could become upset. You could for instance go for walks everyday or find a new hobby that allows you to be more active.

Now you can avoid the grilled cheese and peanut butter sandwiches and instead focus on eating right for your condition. You can alter your lifestyle to include habits which are beneficial to your comfort. Once you start making these changes, feeling great wont be far behind, so get down to work today.
